Long Ago

Long before there were clans, there were only the ten gods. It got awfully lonely and the gods longed for mortal subjects to look after. None of the gods' powers were capable of producing life. With the combined force of all of them, they would be able to create a new god but not without sacrifice. Tamani, the god of plants, volunteered to be the needed sacrifice. The other nine gods were able to produce Kifo, the god of birth and death, in his stead.
Kifo's powers allowed him to make mortals. He filled the land with felines both large and small, creating them in the image of each of the gods. He made one additional feline, the most unique of them all. The common cat, Felis catus, was a relatively small cat that came in many colors, shapes, and sizes. These cats formed the first-ever clans. Banding together based on mutual traits, six distinct groups emerged.
All did not bode well for these clans as they were quick to fight over territory, prey, and the like. This fighting pleased Damu, the god of valor, but upset Kifo as he was responsible for ferrying the souls of the deceased to StarClan. Kifo approached Akili, the deity of wit, for a clever solution to get the clans to stop fighting. They suggested dragging Ndoto, the deity of dreams and medicine, into this chaos by having them craft a disease to wipe out the warring cats. Kifo thought that being able to ferry a whole slew of souls to StarClan at once would be easier than one by one and agreed to ask Ndoto for help. They were reluctant to craft such a powerful disease but when Kifo pleaded with them, Ndoto saw Tamani in his eyes and agreed.
The clans were all but demolished by this disease. The small number of cats who remained put aside their differences to form SunClan.
