The Sunita Williams Elementary School, along with all of the other elementary schools in Needham, have partnered with the Needham Police Department to deliver our annual Bike Rodeo which helps promote safe bicycle operating practices by our students when they are our riding in our neighborhoods and streets.
The Bike Rodeo is an educational experience for our 3rd grade riders and non-riders alike. Riders and non-riders will visit various bicycle education stations to learn about riding safety. Riders have an opportunity to earn their very own Bicycle license.
At our annual Bike Rodeo, 3rd grade students will have a chance to demontrate their riding skills on our bicycle riding course behind the gymnasium. If students pass the riding and the bike quiz, students will receive a bicycle license issued by the Needham Police Department at the end of the rodeo or soon thereafter. The Bicycle license allows students to ride to and from school without requiring an adult act as an escort.
Stop and start their bicycle with confidence.
Ride their bike independently.
Show turn and stop signals while keeping control of their bike.
Look over their left shoulder while keeping the bike under control.
Students need to know their turn signals and stop signals.
Students need to understand the rules bicycle riders are responsible for following while riding on the road vs. riding on the sidewalk.
Students should know simple maintenance tasks to keep their bicycle in good working condition.
