🏔️ Our Story: From Humble Roots to Higher Summits

From Humble Beginnings

In November 2020, three neighbors began meeting weekly, united by a shared love of mountains.
What started as casual get-togethers soon took on a name — The Mountain Goats — inspired by one member who, quite literally, brought his goat along to the very first hike.

A Pause and a New Perspective

In early 2021, life took an unexpected turn when SummitX founder Viana was struck by a sudden and severe illness.
After months of uncertainty and recovery, she returned in January 2022 with renewed energy and a profound sense of purpose.
That experience — of resilience, gratitude, and rediscovery — reignited her passion for mountains and the people who love them.
And with that spark, The Mountain Goats initiative was reborn — stronger, braver, and ready to share the adventure with others.

The First Summit Challenge

The first Mpumalanga Summit Challenge quickly captured hearts and imaginations.
Participants were tasked with reaching the summits of ten preselected peaks in the Greater Lowveld region.
Nearly 30 individuals took part in that first year, and over half successfully completed the challenge.
The dynamic duo Matt Hill and Sam Scott, known as the Supergoat Dream Team, claimed the inaugural title — setting the bar for all who would follow.

Growth and Innovation

In 2023, the challenge grew — both in scope and spirit — featuring 23 peaks and a new points-based system.
Fresh categories were introduced, sparking friendly competition and collaboration.
The Couples category quickly became a favorite, while Teams encouraged hikers to combine strengths and share the climb.
By the year’s end, 20 Gold and 5 Bronze medals had been awarded, and the winners’ names were proudly engraved on SummitX’s floating trophies.

A New Era

The year 2024 marked a major turning point.
The initiative underwent a rebrand and expanded into Eswatini and Lesotho, welcoming a broader community of adventurers.
A new type of explorer emerged — the Hybrid Hiker©️ — combining mountain biking, trail running, and hiking to conquer even greater vertical metres.

The leisurely strolls of the early days gave way to a more dynamic, demanding challenge — but the heart of SummitX remained unchanged: a love for the mountains and the people who climb them.
2024 also emphasized community empowerment and sustainable tourism, reinforcing our commitment to uplifting remote mountain regions through responsible adventure.

Looking Ahead

In 2025, SummitX continued to build on the foundational values that shaped its creation — passion, inclusivity, and respect for the natural world — while preparing for greater horizons across Southern Africa and beyond.

Then, 2026 brings a thrilling new chapter: the Great Escarpment Quest, a pioneering through-hike across the Drakensberg Escarpment — from the Makhonjwas in southern Mpumalanga to the Waterberg watershed in Limpopo.
This ambitious traverse will redefine adventure in the region, setting the stage for more world-class expeditions — including long-awaited journeys to the Chimanimanis and the summiting of three new African country high points.
