Here are the kanji characters for botan (peony) for those who want to practice their calligraphy.
Here are two peony sketches to practice on. The first uses only senbyō-hō (line) strokes.
The second uses gansai (color) and also uses a combination of senbyō-hō with mokkotsu-hō (boneless) strokes to fill in the space inside the lines. The combination of the two is called kōrokutensai-hō. It doesn't matter which (senbyō-hō or mokkotsu-hō) is painted first.
Here is my peony demonstration painting. It makes heavy use of mokkotsu-hō (boneless) strokes.
