Design

Describe your action plan and how each of your four chosen competencies will influence its design and implementation.

My plan of action is to conduct monthly Professional Development (PD) opportunities on the technology learning platforms our district has purchased for use of offsite learning. Then to continue with PD on online tools and resources to create meaningful and engaging lessons for students. I will construct meaningful PD laid out in an interactive, practice right away method. There will also be incentives to attend, including prizes, OPI renewal units, and snacks.

  • Explore and Challenge Inequity: Understanding technology learning barriers amongst staff, as well as technology in the classroom bias. Knowing I am comfortable with technology in the classroom and others dislike the use, helps me keep an open mind when determining the trainings, but also one-on-one support for each individual colleague.

  • Coaching and Mentoring: Taking my knowledge and comfortability to lead my colleagues on an exploration of learning that they will create something they can then use the very next day. Also creating a community where activities and ideas can be shared out.

  • Adult Learning: Making the concepts and learning plan relevant to adult learner needs and desires to learn. What will work with their current workload and is attainable. Creating a clear task-oriented learning plan that allows for adult learners to learn something new, then put into practice and create.

  • Technological Facility: Use multiple technology tools, and focus on the professional responsibilities and user accessibility. Our district is a Microsoft 365 school, so I will focus on these tools in creating online lessons and activities. With COVID our district purchased SeeSaw for elementary use as well as Zearn to assist with teaching math. Both of these applications were new to me, so I went in and learned, completed their PD, and now feel comfortable teaching to our staff what they need to know to make their student learning engaging.

How will your leadership leverage the strengths and address the needs of diverse stakeholders to support the action plan, develop capacity, broaden decision-making, and learn collaboratively?

First I completed a power map (Artifact #3) to determine my main stakeholders. This helped me determine who I should talk to first, and how to plan the PD to bring in those who may oppose. I am continuing to build and cultivate relationships with my colleagues (Artifact #4). I feel very strong in my relationships I have with the colleagues in my building, and through my capstone I am continuing to build on the mentorship piece as well as building relationships with colleagues in other buildings. (Artifact #6). From the PD and open dialogue I have with colleagues from across our district, I am able to then express desires and needs to administration for technology and professional development.

How will you use collaboration, questioning, data, and reflection during the implementation of your action plan?

I will be collaborating with three additional tech coaches in our district. We will meet monthly for planning our PD. Looking at district and building meeting schedules, we determined one Tuesday a month would fit without other interruptions, therefore the PD will be called "Tech Tuesday". For the first PD I conducted informal conversations with colleagues in my building on what learning platform they felt they needed the most help. My team then created the outline (Artifact #7) of how we would conduct the training based off of a PBS TILT (Teachers Innovating and Learning with Technology) training set-up. After conducting the first training in my building (3rd-5th grade) we then asked for feedback which led to a larger desire across all three elementary buildings. After each training we asked for input on the next topic, which is what created our planning stepping stones. Collecting attendance at each training will also give us data on effectiveness and which building has more presence.

How will you address obstacles that you may encounter in implementing your plan?

By planning ahead for possible obstacles, I was able to deflect or repair fairly quickly. The biggest obstacle I anticipate is COVID causing all meetings to be online via Zoom. Knowing we will encounter obstacles, my tech team will meet once a month to plan and assess. We will also reflect after each PD to answer the questions: what went well? What didn't go so well? How engaging were breakout rooms?.

How will you know if your action plan is successful? What evidence would support your claim?

I will know the action plan is successful based on attendance at the "Tech Tuesday" PD. Each training I collect attendance and feedback to support my claim, as well as for OPI renewal units. The ultimate goal is to take this a step forward, past my capstone, and have technology trainings implemented in our district professional development plan. If this happens I will know that administration also saw the value in the trainings.
