Wind Forecasts for the Olympics Sailing Competition (Enoshima, Japan, 2020)
During the Olympic Games 2020, I utilized the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to make real-time wind forecasts for the Dutch sailing team. The initial and boundary conditions were extracted from the Global Forecast System (GFS) with a resolution of 0.25 degrees. The WRF-based forecasts use a new-generation gray-zone planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme with a grid-size of 600 m. More technical details of these real-time forecasts along with ERA5-based hindcasts and validation results will be reported in a future publication.
