Lesson 7.1: Adjust White Balance using Levels

In this lesson you will learn a very basic way to adjust the white balance on images. This is a really basic tutorial and the results are not perfect but it's definitely a useful quick skill to learn.

1. Watch this Youtube video.

2. The first thing you need to do is find an image that you want to edit. This could be anything. I've found that an image where you have photographed an object on a white background works best as you will see that the white of the background never really photographs that well. But you can then use this tutorial to sharpen that colour white.

3. Following the instructions on the video above, go the Photopea website and adjust the white balance by clicking ctrl and L and nudging down the white level until you are happy with the results. Be careful not to go too far as it will start to make the other colours in your image look unrealistic.

4. Save your edited image as a JPEG to your device.

Lesson Resources

3. Following the instructions on the video above, go to the Photopea website and remix the two faces together. Remember to have the YouTube video open to keep referring to it as there are many stages to the successful completion of this task. That is why this lesson is more 'intermediate' and not 'basic'. Teacher Notes

Feel free to copy and paste the lesson instructions above directly into your assignment for students.

For each lesson if required I included a selection of JPEG images that students could download and use to prevent them from wasting their time looking for an image.

If you use Google Classroom you could ask students to upload their Photopea creation at the end of every lesson. Here is a YouTube clip that shows students how to do this. You may want to add this as a final instruction on the assignment.

I am more than happy you using these resources including my images with your students for appropriate educational purposes. But if you share them on a public website or in your own YouTube tutorials, all I ask is that you please credit me appropriately. Thank you
