Create a Video Tutorial

This course will lead you through the absolute basics of creating a video tutorial to share with your students. I use free software and apps to create my tutorials. There are three stages to create a video:

  1. Recording your screen

  2. Editing the recording

  3. Uploading to YouTube

Stage 1: Recording your Screen

To follow this exact tutorial you need to download the Atomi Active Presenter software onto your laptop/desktop. This is a free download. Nimbus is another good free download if you want to experiment with that. Active Presenter allows you to record a thumbnail video of yourself to be included in the footage. This is a nice way to personalise the video for your students but you can deselect this option if you choose not to.

Stage 2 : Editing your Recording

I edit my videos using the free Video Editor supplied with Windows 10. This does not work on Chromebooks. I am currently looking into PowerDirector for editing footage on a Chromebook. It is also free. Check back here soon for a video tutorial using that.

Stage 3: Uploading to YouTube

Uploading your finished video to YouTube is easy. But you may want to tinker with a few of the setting to make sure that it is suitable for your students. Before you do this stage you will need to create a YouTube account. Be careful not to use your school email address to sign up as that channel will be linked to that email account. If you move schools you may struggle to gain access to your channel once you have left. I set up my own channel using my private GMail account.
