AAC & Core Vocabulary

WHAT IS CORE VOBAULARY

Core vocabulary is the term used to describe a set of words that are frequently used in language.  Many of these are the common vocabulary children first learn.  The characteristics are a set of highly useful words, words that are applied across all settings, mostly pronouns, verbs, descriptors, and prepositions.  Anyone with deficits in language/communication should have access to the use of core vocabulary. 

WHAT ARE AAC DEVICES

An alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) device or speech-generated (S device is used for persons who are unable to communicate effectively.  An AC device and be low, mid, or high-tech.  An AAC device is an option to help users communicate effectively using a combination of words, sentences, and images, by touching picture symbols, words, or verbalization.  Students are taught the skills to find core vocabulary words to express needs and wants.  This can be completed by using hands or eye gaze.  These devices are a great way for students that are non-verbal to have a voice.
