Mrs. Rajashree Pinnamaneni, Founder of the Hyderabad-based NGO Gandipet Welfare Society (GWS), has been leading efforts toward achieving Zero Waste through sustainable waste management practices. Established by a group of like-minded citizens, GWS has successfully implemented waste management systems across several municipalities and villages, processing 1,200 tonnes of municipal waste per month.
In addition to setting up and managing solid waste management (SWM) units, GWS organizes weekly cleanup drives around the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs, collecting and processing several tonnes of waste from these water bodies. Extending its footprint, GWS has partnered with a local NGO in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, to manage the town’s municipal waste, furthering its mission to make waste management a way of life.
Beyond waste management, GWS has taken significant steps in heritage conservation. In 2020, the NGO restored a 300-year-old Asif Jah period stepwell at Bapughat, Hyderabad, followed by the restoration of a 300+ year-old stepwell at Bansilalpet, Secunderabad, in 2022-2023—a project fully funded by GWS. Both stepwells are now maintained by the organization.
Adding another milestone to its achievements, Mrs. Rajashree Pinnamaneni, in memory of her late father, Dr. Subba Rao Devineni, Founder of NAVA Ltd., has generously contributed to the restoration of the Nagakunda stepwell and surrounding temples at Sudi. This project, undertaken in collaboration with the Deccan Heritage Foundation (DHF), will further solidify GWS’s role in heritage conservation and environmental sustainability.
