DfC Workshop 2.0 - Midweek
16th -20th May, 2022
16th -20th May, 2022
As the workshop was spread between two weekends, participants had extra time to work on their projects during the week. This also allowed them to use the facilities of the university that they have access to as students, such as the digital fabrication workspace. During the week we scheduled two sessions together with the participants to discuss their progress.
Participants were simultaneously conducting material research and prototyping.
1-1 3D printed mold
1-2 Vacuum formed WFRP sheet
An attempt to recreate the iconic and ubiquitous triangle cone with a WFRP sheet using a vacuum former.
1-3 The "waste" from the cone
1-4 The "waste" from the cone
This participant then looked at the waste of their prototypes and saw potential in the pattern created from the grid of a vacuum machine
1-5 A hand-sewn prototype of a wallet from the "waste"
The participant found that the WFRP sheets become softer after being vacuum formed, and therefore can be easily sewn by hand.
2-1 This participant started with quick and easy paper models.
2-2 Then, she created precise parts using the laser cutter for her final piece.
3-1 This participant worked with the laser cutter to create many zero-waste patterns and tested which pattern stretches the most.
3-2 She created a quick model of a slipper to test her idea.
4-1 Each participants had their own projects and themes, but they were often seen helping each other out.
4-2 We scheduled time for show-and- tell for open communication.
💭 A design background can train one to think through making, for which a "just-try" mindset is important. In the beginning, it seemed that the participants struggled to "just-try", but once they broke through the fear of failure, they were much more active in their individual prototyping and had more to talk about during discussions.
