Making Mends Kids is designed for children to playfully explore notions of breakage and repair through worksheets and hands on activities. Making Mends Kids teaches the skills for visible mending, a style of repairing damaged or worn-out clothing. Visible mending not only restores wear and tear, but is also an act of care that allows a garment to grow and transform with us, taking on a new life and carrying with it the memories of previous ones.
Making Mends Kids is a modular workshop. Facilitators can mix and match activities from the 8 chapters of Making Mends Kids to create a suitable bundle for thier lesson plan for learing goals of the children.
Our Making Mends icebreaker is, of course, also part of the Kids version! Let the students' imagination bloom as they explore the fragility of leaves.
An introduction exercise suitable for when working with a new group of students.
Why do you like a certain garment? Why do you dislike another? A fun activity for children to reflect on their wardrobes.
Chapter 4 explores themes of breakage, repair, and community by asking children to reflect on their own experiences. Children talk about things they've broken in the past, repairers in their family or community, and draw how they would repair a t-shirt.
Chapter 5 is all about learning visible mending techniques: how-tos, tool list and hands-on exercise on visible mending.
Students mend their own garment!
This exercise takes time for students to reflect on their own repair and how they feel about their DIY repaired garment.
What other actions can we take when we no longer use a garment?
There is a playful worksheet to guide the child through each activity.
