The Black Women's project runs and plans fun events for our members and aim to provide a space just for Black women to meet new friends, participate in fun events and talk about our struggle together finding solace in the fact that we may face similar challenges.
BWP York may be in its inaugural year, but we have accomplished a lot this past semester in terms of recruiting members and creating sisterhood on campus for Black women pursuing higher education in York. We aim to help address feelings of imposter syndrome, specifically for Black female students across the University of York and York St John’s, by holding tri-monthly fun meetings.
By doing this, our society provides a space for Black women to connect, share their experiences, and find validation among women who look like them. Our engaging events include our upcoming Galentine’s Day celebration on the 15th of February, where we plan to bake mini pizzas together and hold a game night. But we also host meetings like Sister Circle, a dedicated space for open discussions about mental health challenges.
As we are still in the process of becoming certified to run Sister Circle, we currently provide café hangouts, where we can still talk about the hardships we may face but in a more relaxed environment. However, we are also collaborating with Black health professionals from Open Mind to offer guidance and support to Black female students.
