Who are we:
The BCC provides a safe and relaxing space or students of colour to come together and chill out.
We believe the BCC is important as it is an inclusive place where BAME students are welcome to be themselves and engage in cultural conversation whilst sharing a sense of belonging. We help promote understanding, positive wellbeing and a supportive atmosphere whilst creating a space where people can relax and have some fun.
We organise chill events, conversational afternoons, mentorship programmes and much more. Come join us for some good vibes and some great company.
Looking for a fun and relaxed way to destress and engage in meaningful conversations? Come join our movie chats, where we’ll enjoy films together and dive into discussions on important topics that matter to us.
We’ll be screening the following movies, each followed by a chat on different themes:
Let’s Talk About Hair – Nappily Ever After
Explore the complexities of hair and identity whilst discussing the cultural significance of hair within the BAME community.
Navigating Your Dialect in the Workplace – White Chicks
We’ll take a humorous look at navigating identity and code-switching in professional spaces, inspired by this classic comedy.
Racism in the Curriculum – Get Out
Using this powerful thriller as a starting point, we’ll discuss how systemic racism can appear in academic environments and what we can do to challenge it. Who doesn't love a psychological thriller!
Bring your snacks, join the conversation, and enjoy an evening of great films and engaging discussions.
This is a safe space designed specifically for international students to connect, share and seek support for any concerns they may have. We understand the vast amount of unique challenges that come with studying in the UK , and we are here to ensure that every international student feels heard, supported and empowered throughout their study.
The International Student Support Page will also proceed to host a variety of events, projects and initiatives to foster community and ensure that international students are provided with the environment to thrive both academically and socially. Our events will follow a peer-assisted learning format. This will consist of student-led support sessions that will provide the platform for international students to connect, share experiences and gain helpful insights. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics and will be conducted through creative activities such as arts-based workshops.
Feel free to reach out, participate, and be part of a supportive community that celebrates diversity and encourages growth.
Are you a student eager and interested to make change, meet diverse individuals, and create safe and inclusive spaces that celebrate equality and diversity? Join us by signing up to be part of the committee here:

Some Poetic Inspiration
"Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou is a wonderful poem which celebrates the message of strength and the rise above adversity. Maya Angelou's poems never fail to leave us deep in thought, her powerful writing and immense contribution to literature and civil rights makes her such an important figure. Her writings like 'Still I Rise' and ' I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' have empowered people all over the world.
There are many other activities that you can tap into as a BAME student here at the University of York. One such initiative is BWP which aligns closely with the goals of the BAME Chill Corner.
The Black Women's Project was started in Warick in 2015 abd has since grown to have chapters in other cities such as Leeds, London, and now York! We are a society that is focused on creating a welcoming community for Black women at York. Since the start of the year we have put on events such as a meet and greet, a Nigerian Independence day Party, and a day trip to Leeds! We have more events coming up this semester, which you dont want to miss out on! If you'd like to become a member or get involved in other ways then feel free to follow us on instagram at @bwpyork_ or send us an email at bwp@yorksu.org
