A total number of 226,907 accidents have been recorded, which happened in broad daylight. Which represent the most number compared to other light conditions of which:
-3,393 accidents happened during daylight are fatal which is 1.4% of the total;
-42,630 of accidents are Serious which is 18.7% of the total and the rest are slight.
A total number of 60,420 accidents happened during darkness with light lit, of which:
-916 are fatal which is 1.5% of the total accidents happening during daylight;
-11,622 are serious, which is 19.2% of the total;
-47,882 are slight, which is 79.2% of the total.
A Total number of 16,252 accidents happened in darkness with no lighting, of which:
-1,012 are fatal, which is 6.2% of the total;
-4,990 are serious, which is 30.7% of the total;
-10,250 are slight, which is 63.2% of the total.
A total number of 2,164 of accidents happened in absolute darkness with lights unlit, of which:
-113 are fatal, which is 5.2% of the total;
-481 are serious, which is 22.2% of the total;
-1,570 are slight, which is 72.5% of the total.
From this data, it is absolutely explicit that in darkness and no light fatal and serious accidents are more likely to happen. As we can see during daylight, a total of 1.4% of fatal accidents happened compared to 6.2% and 5.2%, where there was no light and it was complete darkness. This is a fundamentally significant finding since the results show clearly to prevent fatal accident lighting is needed and it is an important factor to consider. However, there are no lights present at all in many areas, as we can see on the graph. This is a significant key issue which the government is overlooking. Another factor affecting the numbers and results of the data represents the number of vehicles present on the road in total during daylight and in the dark with lights lit, unlit and no lighting. Very likely, more vehicles are on the road during daylight which is why most accidents happen during broad daylight. This may be because many of the days to day activities are performed during the day. While during night-time, fewer accidents happen because fewer vehicles are on the road since fewer people are likely to drive around that time. Most of the people are sleeping after 11 pm as reported on https://www.sleepcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/The-Great-British-Bedtime-Report.pdf. After 11 pm people are less likely to be on roads in the UK. In the UK most of the street; lights are switched off between 1 am and 5 am as reported on https://www.essexhighways.org/roads-and-pavements/street-lighting/part-night-lighting.aspx, which take place mostly the time when people are off the roads and sleeping indicating less number of accidents.
