The data used in this report was obtained from the Department for Transport, who collect data on road accidents, vehicle information and casualty details. The data is published annually and is publicly available. Due to data protection, identifiable details are protected, such as exact locations of accidents and any personal information. This report only uses data collected from 2018 in Great Britain, that was reported to the police and recorded using the STATS19 reporting system. The data has been published in 2019.

Annual statistics are mostly presented in units of vehicle miles, which combines the number of vehicles on the road and how far they drive. Annual traffic statistics are compiled using data from around 8,000 roadside 12-hour manual counts, continuous data from automatic traffic counters, and data on road lengths.
