About Us

Student Health Outreach (SHO) focuses its outreach to public health awareness and education. We strive to make a positive impact on local Orange County communities through our volunteerism, health education presentations, and fundraising. To accomplish our goals, we have established various events that we hold throughout the year. Our main events include HIV/AIDS presentations, Teddy Bear Clinics, and a Nutrition Program.

HIV/AIDS Presentation

There are over 1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the US alone. It's becoming more and more common to see younger people affected with this virus and disease. Our goal with our interactive and informative presentation to bring awareness of HIV/AIDS to high school students. Often times, because it is a sexually transmitted illness, there is a stigma that comes with speaking about HIV/AIDS. We hope to break this stigma and open up the conversation to not just prevention methods but also including resources for testing and treatment (for themselves or someone they may know).

Teddy Bear Clinics

A Teddy Bear Clinic (TBC) is a mini doctor's visit we organize for preschoolers. We give each of the preschoolers their own teddy bear so that they can pretend to be the doctor themselves. There are 5 stations that range from temperature check-ups to height and weight measurement. We briefly introduce the preschoolers to these concepts and then we let them give it a try themselves. The purpose of this service event is to familiarize the toddlers with a few components of a basic doctor’s visit. We hope to alleviate any hesitations, fears, or concerns the kids might have when they have to go to the doctor.

My Healthy Start

Eating a healthy and balanced diet has become harder for the growing generation to manage when cheap but unhealthy fast food is an easier option. Our nutrition presentations are aimed to make elementary and middle school students aware of their eating habits at an early age. We hope to teach them about healthy eating habits and make better choices at the grocery store.
