Our introductory episode draws from Elizabeth Hoover's "The River Is In Us: Fighting Toxics in a Mohawk Community", which considers how environmental injustices have upended the lives and traditions of the Akwesasne nation. As Indigenous peoples stand at the intersection of many axis of oppression, we thought it best to start here while we explore how environmental justice works within the Troy community.
This episode examines the background of environmental justice law and explores neighboring communities that have been impacted by polluting industries. We discuss the environmental justice movements of SHARE and Lights out Norlite.
This episode talks about the food apartheid in Troy, NY and the ongoing local and national efforts to ensure everyone has access to safe and healthy foods. In the area, Soul Fire Farm and Free Food Fridge are working to promote food sovereignty.

The River Is in Us: Fighting Toxins in a Mohawk Community Elizabeth Hoover
Friends of the Mahicantuck:
“We work to defend the land at 1011 2nd Ave in Troy NY from a proposed large-scale development. This land is a historically and culturally significant site for the Mahican Indigenous Peoples of the Mahicantuck River Valley (now know as the Hudson River Valley)."
The River Is in Us:
"Elizabeth Hoover takes us deep into Akwesasne, the remarkable indigenous community in upstate New York that partnered with scientists and developed programs to fight the contamination of its lands and reclaim its health and culture. Through in-depth study of archives, newspapers, and public meetings, as well as numerous interviews with community members and scientists, Hoover shows the exact efforts taken by Akwesasne's massive research project and the grassroots activism to preserve Native culture and lands."

SHARE:
“SHARE is a coalition of community, faith, environmental justice and climate action groups whose mission is to stop the proposed Sheridan Hollow fossil fuel power plant that would burn fracked gas in two large turbines to generate both electricity and heat for the Empire State Plaza (accomplished!), and to redirect the state funds dedicated to this project toward a renewable energy solution (partially done!).”
Norlite:
"Norlite is a toxic waste incinerator located in Cohoes, NY... Saratoga Sites, a public housing complex home to 70 families, is just 400 yards from Norlite’s stacks. Those families are now being relocated because of Norlite’s pollution. Lights Out Norlite is an activist organization created to raise awareness about Norlite and the dangers associated with it."

Albany Food Fridges:
“We make fresh foods, fruits, produce, low-intervention foods, ready-to-eat meals (and more) accessible to all. We serve as an anonymous & direct food access point to food insecure neighborhoods, systemically oppressed and marginalized neighborhoods, as well as, and communities that hold the global majority."
Soul Fire Farm:
“Soul Fire Farm is an Afro-Indigenous centered community farm committed to uprooting racism and seeding sovereignty in the food system. We raise and distribute life-giving food as a means to end food apartheid. With deep reverence for the land and wisdom of our ancestors, we work to reclaim our collective right to belong to the earth and to have agency in the food system.”
