Environmental Justice

STSO 4961 - Spring 2022

STSO 4961

In Environmental Justice, we discuss the causes, effects, and possible solutions to the inequities present in the modern environmental movement, and between emissions-producers and the people.

We delve into the work of activists, environmentalists, academics, and more in a bid to better understand global historical processes that structure contemporary inequity work in our own community.

What is Environmental Justice?

Environmental justice is a movement that addresses the unequal exposure of poor and marginalized communities to harm associated with resource extraction, hazardous waste, and other land use.

Final Project

Our final project for Spring '22 focused on how to spread awareness of local environmental justice issues to RPI students. This was implemented through two different ways: an original podcast and tabling events around campus.

The podcast is composed of three unique episodes, all which can be found on the podcast page of this site. They cover a wide range of topics that affect the capital region and the world at large. In addition to the podcast, there are links provided to the various organizations we discuss.

Tabling is a way to get busier people involved as well as reach people who aren't already interested or knowledgeable about these topics. A pamphlet was designed to provide easy access to links and background information about the various organization local to the capital region. Tabling also allowed us to get a better understanding of the range of experience RPI students had about these issues.
