DISCLAIMER this is advice for stretching based on gauge thickness. For septums, you can also stretch based on "stacking" which stretches the septum in an oval shape to accommodate more rings in a fashion that looks likes they are "stacked" on each other. I don't have personal experiences with stacking but this is a great guide for anyone interested in that.
You'll feel when it's too soon (despite all the oil you could use you feel that there is no way you could push the jewelry (usually a curved tapered pincher kind of jewelry) through) and when you're ready (you feel like you can get the jewelry through but it's gonna feel like a - TMI - constipation poop at smaller sizes and a rock solid eye-watering fiery shit as you go larger). The smaller sizes are truly easier. They'll feel more like a slightly uncomfortable stretch with a feeling of fullness.
After stretches, the tip of your nose will feel tender for a few days (similar to when the piercing was first healing) and i would not even think about even beginning to prep for a stretch if that part is still tender. You probably will flitch if you accidentally touch the piercing the days after a stretch but most pain disappears after that first 3-4 days minus that tenderness until it is fully healed. I suggest half sizes after 8g or before if you need them.
You'll prep by lightly tugging on/playing with your septum jewelry until you can feel that there is a bit of empty space when you gently pull. You're not trying to rip your jewelry out. The pull is the same level of gentle tug when you're trying to actively work on stretching muscles, for example. Like when you're trying to push yourself to touch your toes or try yoga. No one (usually) is able to do the splits by just sitting down one day. It may take just a few days (fully healed) at the smallest sizes or literal months as you get larger. Like stretching large muscles further, there will almost always be a slight burn but you'll learn your personal threshold of "ABSOLUTELY NOT" vs "hmm, this'll suck but i can stretch a little further".
TL;DR wait at least 3 months or until the tip of your nose is no longer tender. You can almost always expect tenderness/discomfort during and after a stretch for several days. It's up to your nose anatomy whether a size will hurt since you'll be denting cartilage at some point.
Now that you know how to stretch your nose piercing safely, go ahead and have fun with it. Just remember to take it slow and steady.
Septum stretching jewelry allows individuals to express their unique style while also offering versatility due to its wide range of designs. However, some may find the process uncomfortable during initial stretches or experience difficulty finding suitable pieces based on size preferences.
Ready to take the plunge? Stretching your septum piercing involves gradually increasing its size using specialized tools and jewelry like tapers or plugs. Before beginning the process, it is important to comprehend some essential aspects such as which jewelry select (shown below).
