Strength to Strength - Day 1

Before you begin...

God invites us to make Him our Stillness. A crisis which is an external event can intensify and expose the cacophony of noises within us. And If we are honest, many of these noises are prompted by the push of our Ego to be recognized and acknowledged because it feels it is not.

An invitation to silence is not simply an invitation to hush the noises, but to listen to them, to take notice of them, to distinguish those among these noises which point to something really valuable and needs appropriate response, and also those noises that simply distract or block real responsibility and growth.

Many times behind the really important noises are voices of core desires--those that define genuine identity, those that invite commitment and focus by allowing other more superficial desires to fade away. Those that perhaps God also desires for us. But alas, this latter discernment of deep desiring comes only with stillness, for God's is a still, small voice that whispers with the gentle breeze. We need to retreat, to sit still in our caves and allow the howling winds and storms to pass and gentle breeze to finally come to caress our faces, and speak God's subtle Word.

Let Me Be Your Stillness by Paolo Tirol (Lyrics)

Refrain:

Let Me be your stillness.

Let Me calm the noise within.

Let Me let My peacefulness begin.

Rest for just a moment.

Call My name and see

That you will find your stillness in me.

You run so boldly after dreams,

You run t'wards happiness.

You run so fleetly from your fears,

You run from loneliness.

Though you've run so far you realize

You're right where you began.

Be still, be still and take My hand. [refrain]

So anxious over answers yet

Uncertain and unknown.

So fearful over failures,

Over wishes unbestown.

So troubled over countless things

You cannot even name.

Be still, My hand will ease your pain. [refrain]

So anxious over answers yet

Uncertain and unknown.

So fearful over failures,

Over wishes unbestown.

So troubled over countless things

You cannot even name.

Be still, My hand will ease your pain.

Yes, you will find your stillness in Me.

The Source of Our Strengths

Prayer from Psalm 139:1-18

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord know it completely.

You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"

even the darkness will not be dark to you;

the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,

when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;

all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!

Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand - when I awake, I am still with you.

When you feel depleted and spent, where do you draw strength from? Let us learn from one of the greatest kings who ever lived the Source of his power and success.

David looks out to God to discover what His true strengths and passions are.

David looks into himself to see how he can live a life of love with the gifts bestowed on him.

Return to God and rediscover your true strengths. Learn, Love, Live them as God's greatest gift to you, and your greatest gift to others.

Positivity. Belief. Arranger. Maximizer. Connectedness.

Psalm 139: 10-12

“even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me

and the light become night around me,”

even the darkness will not be dark to you;

the night will shine like the day,

for darkness is as light to you.

Have you ever felt shaken to the point of not being able to feel your knees to be able to stand? Have you ever felt a time when the world stopped and every part of your body numbed in disbelief? Was there a time when not a single drop of tear may drop because there was no time to feel?

Yes, I had all those feelings…

In the late 1990s, my five year old daughter got kidnapped inside her school. I was facilitating a workshop when my husband tried connecting with me through pager messages. When I got the chance to take a break, my co- facilitators already got in touch with my husband and so, they were the ones who told me, “Coach May, take a deep breathe, your daughter is missing”…One cannot imagine the fear and anxiety I felt. My entire body was shaking as I travelled 2 hours back to our house. While in the car, I can only think of ONE thing to do…that was, to pray the Rosary. I prayed while crying and asking God to protect my baby…Slowly…slowly… the shaking stopped and my senses came back. I knew what to do, who to call for immediate help.

It took more than 24 hours to declare that there was indeed a kidnapping that took place… we got our first call from the kidnapper. I was trembling, my voice was cracking… they were asking us 5 Million pesos in exchange for the life of my child.

In the midst of all the worries and fear of the unimaginable, my family and I, together with so many friends and faceless people prayed… that in these times of darkness, the light of Jesus shall prevail… Full unconditional Trust in Him.

Psalm 139: 13-14

For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,

I know that full well.

Moreover, our choice was to pray for forgiveness and love for the kidnappers. Our choice was not to contribute to the negative energy the universe was experiencing. It was an absolute humility to be doing this while we were not in the know, while my baby might be suffering already… Everybody is a child of God, we prayed that God will give positive senses to the kidnappers… we prayed that the guardian angels will protect my baby.

3 days after, the Pink Sisters of Baguio, called us and said…”Expect a miracle to happen on September 8, it will be Mama Mary’s birthday gift on her birthday to you”. And, we believed without a single doubt, we shall see my baby again on September 8!

True enough, a miracle happened on September 8. After 5 1/2 days of captivity, Angel, my daughter was rescued safe and unharmed. To top it all, when I was preparing her to take her witness stand, I asked her why she would tell her story to all. She said, “Mama, I don’t want other children to experience what I had experienced.” This has served me and my family a sense of how full trust in the Lord creates miracles. Through prayers, we get forgiveness, kindness, love and peace.

Yes, we have an Amazing God!

Guide Questions for Reflection

  1. Read Psalm 139. Be keenly aware of the Lord’s presence. The God who created the heavens and earth fearfully and wonderfully created you. Spend your time in prayer and journal what He has been impressing upon you during this time.

  2. As an alternative, listen instead to the song at the end of the video. Write your thoughts and feelings as you listen.

  3. Bring your fears, your pains, and your neediness before your Maker. Spend this time asking the Lord for the strength you need to overcome.

  4. When you feel depleted and spent, where do you draw your strength from?

  5. What practical steps can you take in order to grow your intimacy with the Lord?
