When we all pitch in and help each other out, lifting each other up, we all benefit. As suggested by Matthieu Ricard² , cooperation and collaboration (rather than competition) are the most efficient methods for societal progress and civilization advancement³.
Chitragupta चित्रगुप्त is first mentioned in the Rigveda, an ancient Hindu text written circa 1700 B.C., as having been formed from Lord Brahma the Creator's mind and soul. Chitragupta is the 17th son of Brahma and regarded as the king over the other sons (king of kings) or lord of lords, as the only son created in entirety from Brahma's body. Chitraguptra is the karmic accountant of all sentient beings, maintaining written records of these accounts, and is regarded as the author of the Vedas.
The word Akash आकाश means Heaven in Hindi. The written records of karmic accounts are formed and stored in Heaven. The next mention of records of humanity in religious texts still preserved today is found in Exodus 32:32⁴ of the Torah, written in 1312 B.C. The Tanakh, canonized between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D., parallels the Christian Bible in Malachi 3:16-18⁵
16. Then the God-fearing men spoke to one another, and the Lord hearkened and heard it. And a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who feared the Lord and for those who valued His name highly.
17. And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of Hosts, for that day when I make a treasure. And I will have compassion on them as a man has compassion on his son who serves him.
18. And you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who has not served Him.
In Malachi, the Book of Life is more akin to karmic account keeping than in Psalm 139:16⁶
16. Your eyes could see me as an embryo, but in your book all my days were already written; my days had been shaped before any of them existed.
17. God, how I prize your thoughts! How many of them there are!
18. If I count them, there are more than grains of sand; if I finish the count, I am still with you.
Christian mentions of the Lamb's Book of Life continue in the Bible⁷, .
Luke 10:20- 21⁸
20. Yet in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subjected to you, but rejoice that your names are written in the heavens. 21. In the same hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit and said, I praise thee, Father, Lord of the heaven and of the earth, that thou hast hid these things from wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes: yea, Father, for thus has it been well-pleasing in thy sight.
