James Rutter Middle School began participating in the California Story Map Competition in 2018. Within the middle school division the students of Rutter Middle School have distinguished themselves with the greatest number of entries that have placed for awards and recognition of any middle school. Students from Rutter Middle School have traveled to San Diego to exhibit their story map products multiple years at the International GIS User Conference Map Gallery in the Youth section. The success of the Rutter Middle School students in this competition and the use of WebGIS as part of instruction has resulted in national recognition in the use of geospatial technology by a school.
The “My California GIS Mapping Showcase and Competition” is an annual event that began in 2016. This exciting statewide opportunity encourages middle (4th-8th grade) and high school (9th-12th grade) students to harness the power of Geographic Information Systems and get connected with their state by producing an online map that focuses on stories, issues, or ideas that are important to them.
Each school is eligible to submit a maximum of five entries. The winners of the State competition go on to compete in the National competition sponsored by ESRI.
