Another viable solution to efficiently manage excess storm water runoff in urban areas is implementing green roofs. The general idea of a green roof is pretty self explanatory. Instead of using standard roofing materials, the idea is plant vegetation on the roofs of buildings. Instead of the water falling into a gutter system, then being drained onto the pavement down below or directly into the sewer, the water is instead captured by the green roof. This water directly hydrates the vegetation on roofs, yielding countless benefits. In addition to minimizing the amount of stormwater runoff, the vegetation on the roofs also adds much needed oxygen into the polluted city air.
