Recognized as a "By and For Organization" by the Washington State Department of Commerce

At Shepherd's Transformation Mansions Communities [STMC], we believe that true community upliftment starts from within. We are proud to announce that we have been officially recognized as a "By and For Organization" by the Washington State Department of Commerce Housing Division. This critical designation validates our ongoing commitment to community-led housing solutions and opens new doors to expand our impact across Washington State.

What Does It Mean to Be "By and For"?

The Washington State Department of Commerce defines a "By and For Organization" as one that is deeply rooted in the community it serves. It means that:

We reflect you: Our leadership, staff, and board share the racial, ethnic, and cultural identities of the people we serve.
We are community-directed: Our primary mission, history, and daily operations are guided by and substantially controlled by individuals from our community.
We center cultural values: Our programs are not one-size-fits-all; they are culturally relevant, respectful, and intentionally designed to meet the unique, structural challenges our community faces.

What This Recognition Means for Our Future

Being verified as a "By and For Organization" by the State's Housing Division is more than just a title—it is a gateway to vital resources. The state recognizes that structural barriers often prevent equitable access to affordable housing, homeownership, and homelessness prevention.

With this designation, STMC is now better positioned to:

Access Targeted Funding: Partner more closely with state initiatives like the Housing Trust Fund and the Community Reinvestment Program (CRP) to bring dedicated housing resources directly to our neighborhoods.
Expand Culturally Relevant Services: Grow our capacity to provide housing-focused case management, homeownership support, and [Insert specific service, e.g., rental assistance/tenant advocacy] without compromising our cultural core.
Advocate at the State Level: Serve as a direct, trusted bridge between our community and state policymakers, ensuring our voices shape the future of housing in Washington.

Land Acknowledgement

The U.S. is invisibilizing the genocide, stolen lifeways, and stolen land that was the result of Manifest Destiny. As a result, it is important for systems, organizations, and non-indigenous people to acknowledge the original people for which land they stand on. Relatedly, it is also critical to stand up for and with indigenous people as they continue to face continue occupation and erasure.

Indigenous

To be fully inclusive of all tribes and communities in Orth America, we described they original people of this land as Indigenous. Using the word Native is acceptable, yet Native American or Indian have essentially become antiquated and should only be used by Indigenous people or unless specifically requested.
