In the Spring of 2022, in partnership with SJA's administration, we applied for a Believe in Me! grant from The Catholic Coalition for Special Education (CCSE). SJA was awarded funding to launch our initiatives in the 2022-2023 school year. The grant supported personnel, training, and services for the staff in order to benefit students with special needs.
In this talk in October 2024, Dr. Katia Fredriksen reviewed the characteristics commonly associated with ADHD, Executive Functioning, and Anxiety in children, including things to look out for, as well as misconceptions. She discussed strategies that parents and teachers can implement in order to support children who are experiencing difficulties in these areas.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Fredriksen offers lectures to parent groups and professional organizations. In addition, she and her colleague, Yael Rothman, Ph.D., recently published a children's book on ADHD, "Different Thinkers: ADHD." Their next book, "Different Thinkers: Autism," will be available next year.
Maggie Hubbard, a seasoned 30+-year educator as teacher, assistant principal, and director of special education in the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., has been working with SJA as an Instructional Coach as a part of our grant from the Catholic Coalition for Special Education. On February 14, 2025, Mrs. Hubbard led the SJA staff in a professional development day focusing on Co-teaching and Pushing-in Strategies.

In a 2005 statement on Catholic education, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops encouraged Catholic schools to “continue to look for ways to include and serve better the needs of young people in our Church who have special educational and physical needs.” Named after Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel, the Fiat award honors a member of our school community who has responded in that same spirit: with unwavering commitment to serving all children.
