About Tool 2
This interactive data visualization tool displays attendance, dropout, and discipline rates by St. Louis school districts from 2017-2024. While the first interactive tool (described in the prior section) focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on academic performance through MAP scores, this second interactive tool allows the user to examine how student behavior and engagement may have been impacted by the pandemic. It allows users to generate unique visuals by choosing from two variables: Measure and School District.
Measure includes three outcomes: Attendance Rate, Dropout Rate, and Discipline Rate. While the first interactive tool reports data by grade level, the data reported for attendance, dropout and discipline are not grade specific. Rather, DESE reports these data based on ALL students in the district.
Attendance Rate is the proportion of students (at all grade levels, from all schools in the district) who attend school at least 90% of the time. In other words, for a student to meet the 90% attendance rate criteria, they must attend school at least 9 out of 10 school days.
Dropout Rate is the rate of students who leave during the school year and don’t return, either by transferring or re-enrolling. While DESE reports Attendance Rate and Discipline Rate data for grades K-12, Dropout Rate data are only reported for grades 9-12.
Discipline Rate is the total incident rate of students (per 100) who are removed from the traditional classroom setting for 10 or more consecutive days. There are six types of disciplinary incidents: Weapon, Alcohol, Drug, Tobacco, Violent Act, and Other. All six are combined when calculating the Discipline Rate.
For School District, the same 24 districts are available to choose from, and Missouri’s fixed state average appears on all charts.
In each chart, the years 2020-2022 are shaded and labelled to indicate the period during which the COVID-19 pandemic most disrupted schools. In total, Graph B can generate over 200 unique visuals.
