All data for this project were obtained from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education online database. Data were obtained for all 24 public school districts in the Missouri portion of the St. Louis metropolitan area for years 2017-2024; state averages for Missouri were also obtained for the same time period. After the data were obtained, cleaned, and organized, two interactive data visualizations were constructed using Tableau Software, LLC.
The interactive data visualizations allow users to examine four types of student outcomes for each school district: MAP scores, attendance rate, discipline rate, and dropout rate. MAP scores are from standardized tests administered as part of the Missouri Assessment Program, which assesses student proficiency in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science between grades 3-8. For each content area and grade level, students are classified as below basic, basic, proficient, or advanced. In the interactive visualizations, “below basic” and “basic” are combined, and “proficient” and “advanced” are combined. DESE’s definitions and explanations of MAP scores, attendance rate, discipline rate, and dropout rate are available here.
In some cases, data were incomplete or missing. This usually occurred for one of two reasons: (1) no students met the criteria (e.g. no students scored Proficient or Advanced on a particular MAP test for a particular grade level) or (2) no data were reported by districts or by DESE and no explanation for the missing data was given. A complete list of missing data for these visualizations can be seen on this spreadsheet.
Users are invited to explore the data using the two interactive data visualization tools shown above.
