Q: What age can my swimmer begin synchro?
A: The Stillwater Synchro Club is for swimmers 5-19 years of age.
Q: Does my child need to have experience?
A: No. The minimum requirement is that your child can independently swim two lengths of the pool. Basic knowledge of swim strokes is recommended.
Q: Does my child need to have had swimming lessons?
A: While it is not required, it is a good idea to have had some formal swimming lessons. We recommend swimmers have skills similar to at least level 3 (ARC) before starting.
Q: My son is interested, can he join?
A: Absolutely! Artistic Swimming is not a gender specific sport. All are welcome to join!
Q: How can I learn more about Stillwater Synchro?
A: Contact one of our head coaches (see the contact us page) via email and we will answer any questions you have.
Q: When is the Stillwater Synchro season?
A: Practices typically begin late-September. For most swimmers, the season will go through early-May. There may be an opportunity for qualifying athletes to compete at Nationals. Those swimmers will practice into late June.
Q: How often does the Stillwater Synchro Club practice?
A: Our club practices 2-3 days each week - typically Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday for approximately 2 hours each day. Days and times may vary.
Q: Where are practices held?
A: Stillwater Middle School, 523 Marsh Street (pool entrance is in back of the building on Orleans)
Q: Are there different age or level categories?
A: Yes. There are multiple levels, and multiple age-categories in each level. The age is determined by birth year and year of competition.
Q: What basic supplies do I need for my child?
A: At least one 1-piece swimsuit for practice (plus an ALL Black 1-piece for meets), goggles, swim cap, nose clips, and non-glass water bottle are needed. Dryland practices also require a yoga mat, yoga brick, and workout clothes (shorts, t-shirt, socks, tennis shoes).
Q: Where is a good place to purchase practice items?
A: SwimOutlet.com has many options for suits, small nose clips, silicone swim caps and goggles. We encourage you to use this link, it gives a kickback incentive to the SAHS Ponies Synchro Team - https://www.swimoutlet.com/poniessynchro/.
Q: When do swimmers perform routines or have competitions?
A: All swimmers will perform at our show usually in early-February. They will then compete at our East Association Meet in late-February. Most of our swimmers will also compete at the Regional Championship Meet in early-May. Some swimmers may also compete at a Zone Championship (early-March), or even at Nationals (late-June/early-July).
Q: What are the different routine events?
A: There are several routine categories we will place our swimmers into: team, trio, duet, solo, combo, and acro.
Q: What is a small number routine?
A: Small number routines are Trios (3 swimmers), Duets (2 swimmers), and Solos (1 swimmer).
Q: What is a Figure?
A: Figures are made up of a combination of skills and positions that often require control, strength, and flexibility. They are the individual movements that are performed for a panel of judges. (Ex: Straight Ballet Leg, Walkover Back, Kip...) They can also be combined with each other to make the "hybrids" that are used within a routine.
Q: How can I help my child be successful?
A: We encourage athletes to attend all practices. While some aspects are individual, it is even more so a team sport.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: We usually divide the season up into two-month sessions. Swimmers can expect to pay about $250-350 every two months depending on which group they participate in. In addition, a required membership/insurance fee through USAAS (about $110) is due annually at the beginning of the season. There are also costs involved with equipment and competition suits & headpieces. Those costs can vary greatly.
Q: Does your club have social media accounts?
A: Yes. Our club page can be found on Instagram @stillwatersynchroclub. There is also a Facebook page for the SAHS Ponies team @stillwatersynchro.
