What is St Florian University?
St Florian University is a weekend of classes and workshops with a pre-17th Century focus. The event is hosted by the Barony of St Florian de la Riviere, the South Brisbane chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism.
What kind of classes are available?
We have a mix of classes and workshops, which change with each event. Some are lecture-style classes about particular topics in history, and others are practical classes where you can learn historical skills and make items to wear or use at SCA events.
Do I need to be a member of the SCA?
You do not have to be a member of the SCA to attend St Florian University. We love meeting newcomers, and a casual event like St Florian University is a great way to dip your toes into the SCA! Please be aware that there is a $10 insurance fee for non-members, on top of the ticket price.
Do I need to wear medieval clothing?
This is a non-garbed event (no medieval clothing needed), please wear casual, comfortable clothing. Enclosed shoes and clothes you can get dirty are strongly recommended for practical classes.
What equipment should I bring?
You will receive a small notebook and a pen when you sign into the event, but you may also wish to bring other equipment such as additional paper/stationery, a sewing kit, etc.
Required equipment for classes will be listed in the class description (some equipment and materials may also be available for purchase from the teacher).
What kind of class should I teach?
You can teach any kind of class you like! You can teach a theoretical class, run a practical workshop, host a roundtable discussion, and more. Your class can be about any area of interest or skill, and can be aimed at any experience level.
What if I need extra equipment for my class?
All classes can make use of the chairs and tables in the hall. We also have a TV with HDMI connection, a small commercial kitchen, and outdoor space available if needed - please select which equipment you will need on the Teacher Sign Up form. For all other equipment inquiries, please contact the Event Steward.
What if I've never taught a class before?
No teaching experience is necessary! St Florian University is a supportive learning environment, and that applies to learning to teach too. If you'd like a little extra help with preparing your first class, please contact the Event Steward.
Do I need to bring food?
Lunch, snacks, and hot beverages are included in the cost of your ticket. We will have a some fridge space available if you would like to bring your own food.
Will my dietary requirements be catered for?
We will do our best to cater for people with special dietary requirements, but if we are not able to meet your needs, the Event Steward will be in contact with you to discuss other options. Please make sure that you indicate your specific requirements on the Booking Form so that we have accurate numbers - unfortunately we will not be able to cater for your dietary requirements if you have not included them when booking.
