Workshop November 22 2020: First STEWARD hands-on Mentoring Training Workshop

Discussions were held on:
Mentoring Levels + Basic(silver level) do’s and don’ts
Mentor-Mentee Code-of-Conduct/Agreement
Common Serious/Existential Issues Mentees face, Institutional formal processes to deal with them and how well they work (do not work)
Informal institutional processes to address above
Earth level mentor do’s and don’ts
Evergreen level: Defining Success (for individual mentees and for the STEWARD mentoring program)
Free discussion on above points and less existential issues Mentees face (for future break outs on earth and evergreen levels)
A discussion with Anne Condon, Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, and a leader of a STEM Canada program - EnGendering Success in STEM - targeting academic and early career researchers. Topics include the following:
Recognition of social exclusion / implicit bias, etc., and negative impacts.
Discrimination and other problems that impact all under-represented groups, with a focus on those that have a special impact on women.
The effectiveness and importance of 1-on-1 mentoring of women by women, bolstered by peer support networks.
STEWARD mentoring dos and don'ts.
