My research focuses on economic history, innovation economics and technological change, with a particular interest in how institutions shape inventive activity.
Much of my work uses the history of the British patent system to study questions around patent policy, disclosure, innovation quality and technological development. I combine historical data with methods from applied econometrics, causal inference, text analysis and machine learning.
Patents, Institutions & Innovation
How changes in patent systems influence inventive behaviour and technological development.
Measuring Innovation from Text
Using patent text, natural language processing and machine learning to measure novelty, similarity and disclosure.
Digital Markets & Consumer Behaviour
Using platform data to study consumer responses to changes in pricing and business models.
