Why did you join civically engaged Scholars?Â
As an ASL interpreter student, I have joined the civically engaged scholars because it will greatly benefit my personal and professional growth. Participating in community service activities will be able to deepen my understanding of the Deaf cultures and a variety of perspectives, ultimately enhancing my interpreting skills.
These experiences will also help me to develop essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. These are crucial qualities for any successful ASL interpreter, as we will often work in diverse and challenging environments.
Moreover, being part of a civically engaged group provides valuable networking opportunities. I can connect with other interpreters and community leaders, leading to new job prospects, mentorship relationships, and collaborations.
Engaging in community service is personally fulfilling. It provides me with a sense of purpose and satisfaction, knowing that I am making a positive impact on my community. By joining the civically engaged scholars, I can enhance my professional skills while contributing to a more just and equitable society.
Which Pathway are you excited to learn more about, and why?
I believe the pathway I am most excited about learning more about would be that of direct service. Being able to focus on addressing the immediate needs of individuals in the community allows me a more hands-on way to contribute. I appreciate such a direct approach as it allows me to see the impact of my efforts, and I am also engaging with community members directly, which will help enhance my communication and interpersonal skills with the Deaf community.
