We're counting down the days until the STEP exchange week! On this page, you will find some practical details that will help you prepare for your travels and navigate through the week. On the first day of the exchange week, you'll receive a workbook in which we include these details as well, together with the week schedule, assignments for the week, and plenty of room to take notes.
During the exchange week, the coordinator of the programme, Esmée Bruggink, is there to help you with all things practical. If you need to contact her quickly, you can best call her or send her a text message (SMS or WhatsApp) on +31(0)650010389. If she is not available, please try and contact her colleague Tirsa Guelen-Satink (+31(0)631132280). We also recommend you to exchange numbers with your teacher trainer, your fellow students from your university, and your team members in the programme.
Radboud University has an eduroam network on campus. If your university works with eduroam as well, you shouldn't have any trouble logging in. If you aren't able to work with eduroam, please let us know: we can generate a code with which you can access eduroam as a guest user. This is a temporary code that needs to be renewed daily.
Much of the programme takes place on the campus of Radboud University. On the website, you find a campus building overview, as well as a campus map. The buildings where we will meet during the exchange week, are:
The Maria Montessori Building (abbr. MM), address: Thomas van Aquinostraat 4
The Elinor Ostrom Building (abbr. EOS), address: Heyendaalseweg 141
De Refter (university diner), address: Erasmusplein 3
The Erasmus Building (abbr. E), address: Erasmusplein 1
The CultuurCafé (campus bar), address: Mercatorpad 1
The exact room numbers are listed in the schedule of the exchange week. Each morning, we will wait for you in the central hall of the Maria Montessori Building to get you on your way. The Dutch participants are happy to help you out as well.
On Tuesday morning, we meet off campus at the Montessori College. The school is located at the Kwakkenbergweg 27, and (depending on where you're staying) is best to be reached by bus (see below).
On Monday evening, we're meeting in the city centre for the opening dinner at restaurant De Waagh (Grote Markt 26). On Thursday, you will get to see more of Nijmegen when the Dutch students give you a tour of some of their highlights of the city. More information about Nijmegen can be found here and at the Tourist Information Point Nijmegen (Grote Markt 17, Wed-Sun 10 am-5 pm).
The participants in the STEP programme stay at different accomodations in Nijmegen. Depending on where you're staying, you need to make use of public transport to reach (some of) the locations. Travelling by bus is very convenient in Nijmegen and all destinations during the exchange week are well connected.
To plan your journey, we recommend you to make use of the 9292 website or application: www.9292.nl/en.
To be able to travel by bus, you either need an OV-chipkaart (smart card), a single-use ticket, or an e-ticket.
OV-chipkaart (smart card): you buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart for 8 euros at the service desk of the central station and charge credit to the card at the service desk or one of the yellow service machines. Always make sure to check in when boarding your bus, and don't forget to check out in the bus upon arrival.
Single-use ticket: it's also possible (and perhaps easier) to buy a single-use ticket in the bus. You need a debit card or credit card to pay for your ticket (cash is not possible).
E-ticket: the website/app 9292 also offers e-tickets for the bus. You can select and pay for the e-ticket after planning your journey. Show the e-ticket to the bus driver when boarding your bus.
The Montessori College can be reached via the following bus lines:
Bus 5 Groesbeek, stop: Groenewoudseweg (+ 15 minute walk)
Bus 8 Berg en Dal, stop: Kwakkenbergweg/Sophiaweg (+ 6 minute walk)
Bus 2 Maartenskliniek, stop: Caesarstraat (+ 11 minute walk)
NB Make sure to always look both at the number and name of the bus: different names indicate different directions.
Are you in need of a taxi? Nijmegen has several taxi companies that can transport you around town. You can pay with cash or debit card. Taxis are directly available at the central station of Nijmegen. Would you rather be picked up? Recommended services are:
Taxi Nijmegen: +31(0)85 303 68 16
Taxi Nijmegen24: +31(0)24 711 36 64
Taxi TCN Nijmegen: +31(0)24 366 00 44
Dutch people love to bike. Do you want to join them? Visit the tourist information website to read how and where to rent a bike during your stay in Nijmegen.
In the week schedule, we've indicated when to bring your own lunch (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). On Tuesday and Thursday, we did not arrange for your dinner since we scheduled some time off for you on those days. All the other lunches, dinners, and drinks that are planned in the schedule, are arranged for by us and at the organization's costs.
On campus, there are different options for you to get lunch, snacks, and drinks:
On the first floor of the Maria Montessori Building, you find Grand Café Iris.
De Refter is the university's diner. The food court offers a wide selection of fresh and healthy dishes, both for lunch and dinner. For our dinner on Wednesday, you'll receive a coupon to spend at the diner.
The CultuurCafé is the bar on campus.
On the ground floor of the Erasmus Building, you find a Spar supermarket that is open on weekdays from 8am to 8pm.
Bigger supermarkets in the city centre are the Albert Heijn (Bloemerstraat 133, 8am-10pm) and the Plus (Passage Molenpoort 28, 8am-9pm). For a sustainable supermarket, Ekoplaza is the place to go (Ziekerstraat 79, 8am-8pm).
