On the second day of the exchange week, we will visit the Montessori College Nijmegen. The Montessori College is based on the ideas of Italian educator Maria Montessori (1870-1952) and therefore has self-directed learning at the very core of its educational approach. Learn more below.

Surprise yourself
Montessori is an educational concept for preschool, primary and secondary education. The Montessori method supports children’s sense of curiosity and initiative, and encourages the development of their natural abilities, particularly through practical play. Children learn to work independently. Nowadays, Montessori schools often combine Montessori materials with regular language and math methods. In the final step of each case study, you learn more about Montessori education in preparation of our school visit.
The Montessori College Nijmegen is one of 15 Montessori schools for secondary education in the Netherlands and offers all available school levels. The school motto is 'Blijf jezelf verbazen' (Keep surprising yourself), which relates to the central Montessori principle (see below!).
Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome. She became a doctor and a philosopher, but it was as an educator that the world came to know her. Pupils from whom nothing was really expected turned out to perform excellently because of her way of thinking. She discovered that children themselves want to learn a lot, as long as you create the right conditions, for example: starting with the needs of the pupil, giving them the space and freedom to develop their talents, and allowing students to be self-directed. The Montessori approach that is based on these ideas, revolves around her principle help me to do it myself.
In 2023, a movie came out that depicts Maria Montessori's early years. In the exchange week, we will watch and discuss the movie together.
A view of the school
Why Montessori? Because it allows you to develop into a whole, self-confident person. Every day, we encourage you in your development. Based on the ideas of our greatest source of inspiration: Maria Montessori. 'Help me to do it myself,' she said in the 19th century. That means that you have our trust. And that you can count on a personal approach and appropriate guidance. So that you can discover your personal, unique talents. This will give you a strong foundation for the many choices and responsibilities you will face. Now and later. So, thanks to Maria Montessori, you get a 'lesson for life'.
