After the Desert – Imagine Wash’s Next Adventure

At the end of Washington Black, Wash walks into the desert.
“I stepped out onto the threshold, the sand stinging me, blinding my eyes… The wind across my forehead was like a living thing.”

The story ends there. But Wash’s life does not. Now it’s your turn to imagine what happens next.

 Your group will create and perform a short scene
from Wash Black’s future.

Step 1: Pick a Time Jump

Your scene must take place 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years after Wash walks into the desert.

Where is he now?
What has he become?
What kind of life is he building?

Step 2: Create a 10-Minute Scene

Your group will write and perform a short scene showing what happens next in Wash’s story.

Every scene must include:

A Narrator
Someone who helps guide the audience and explain what has happened since the end of the novel.

Wash Black
One student must play Wash and show how he has grown or changed.

Other Characters
Each person in your group should play a role. You can include characters from the book (like Tanna or Titch) or create new ones Wash might meet.

A STEM Moment
Remember Wash’s love of science and invention. Your scene should include a problem to solve involving science, engineering, exploration, or discovery.

A Big Decision
Wash must face an important choice about his future, identity, freedom, or recognition.

Opening Line

Every group must begin their performance with this line:

“The desert did not frighten him …”

Make It Your Own

This is a performance, so have fun with it.

You may:

• Bring simple props

• Create sound effects

• Use costumes or visuals

• Add humor, suspense, or drama
  
  

Performance Rules

Every person in your group must have a speaking role
Your performance should be no longer than 10 minutes
Your goal is to show the audience who Wash becomes when he is finally free to choose his own path

What kind of future will Wash Black create?
