Week One: Beginnings and Possibility
Chapters 1–5
George Washington “Wash” Black, an eleven-year-old enslaved boy on a Barbados sugar plantation, lives under the constant control and danger of plantation life. Raised largely by Big Kit, who watches over him with fierce care, Wash survives by observing the world around him and nurturing a quiet curiosity about nature and drawing. His life begins to change when Christopher “Titch” Wilde, the brother of the plantation owner and a scientist, notices Wash’s talent and recruits him to help with his experiments. For the first time, Wash glimpses ideas and opportunities beyond the plantation. These chapters introduce the harsh realities of slavery while also revealing Wash’s growing imagination, intelligence, and the first hints that his future might stretch far beyond the boundaries of the plantation.
