My school's primary publication, Padua360, is solely online. This gives us an opportunity to focus on producing quality content in a timely manner as well as constantly working on tactics to increase viewership. Redesigning our website significantly aided in this process, as well as encouraging staff members to share their stories on social media to gain new visitors. Many students have active Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook accounts, and sharing their stories on their accounts makes a noticeable difference in viewership.
Regularly checking our website's analytics page has helped me to understand the habits of our viewers and has also encouraged me to work towards acquiring new viewers.
One of our publication's main problems with viewership is students simply did not know about it. To try and remedy this as much as possible, I share stories with other students not involved in the publication whenever possible, and encourage other staff members to do the same.
One of the difficulties with which I have worked has been covering as much as possible with a very limited staff. Including me, Padua360 has a staff of 12 students. It has not been easy ensuring that everything that must be covered is covered quickly and efficiently when so many people are working on so many things at once. However, we have worked to remedy this through assigning realistic deadlines and content goals.
Helping students to produce web content that they genuinely enjoy creating has aided in this process. For example, one staffer particularly enjoys producing videos, while another loves making infographics, and yet another favors photo galleries. While I regularly challenge them to try new types of stories, content is produced much more quickly when they are comfortable with the format.
One of the benefits of having an online publication is the wide array of media it allows us to explore. We have produced broadcast videos, infographics, interactive graphics, photo galleries, and more.
