While designing has not been my primary focus, I have enjoyed producing infographics for our publication as well as helping to redesign our website at the beginning of my senior year. The design of the site had been virtually unchanged since I joined the staff, and it was undoubtedly time for a new, less cluttered design that presented stories in a more professional manner.
This was our website after some basic redesigns were done at the beginning of my senior year. While it had improved since I first joined the staff, we were in need of a change. Information was cluttered and stories were shoved off to the side, while headlines were not featured prominently and blank spaces grabbed the viewer's attention. Furthermore, the logo was many years out of date and featured students that had long since graduated.
By improving the overall design of the website, my staff and I hoped to increased readably and attract new visitors with a design that showed off the hard work we consistently produce.
This is our website now, after a much-needed redesign that presents stories with a coherent, professional design. Categories are more clearly presented without overpowering elements, and the cleaner theme is considerably easier on the eye.
When appropriate, I challenge myself to present stories in new ways. For example, some stories would be acceptable as plain text, but could bring another dimension to Padua360 if they were presented in infographic form. This is an example of one such story, in which I challenged myself to present anecdotes from students in a coherent design that incorporated visually attractive elements.
