EATING RIGHT, A PLANT BASED DIET
WHAT FOODS WE EAT CAN HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON ONE'S OVERALL HEALTH AS WELL AS THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET
Whole Foods Plant-Based Diet (WFPBD):
eating minimally processed whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables
avoiding all animal protein (meat, fish, dairy, eggs) and all processed oils
Studies have shown that following a WFPBD can:
lower risk of prostate, breast, colon cancers, and other cancers
prevent, even reverse, heart disease and prevent stroke
lower blood pressure and cholesterol
stabilize blood sugars and may reverse diabetes
prevent some autoimmune diseases
lose weight
Facts about why moving to a whole foods plant based diet is a good choice for the earth:
In the US more than 9 billion livestock are maintained to supply the animal protein consumed each year. This livestock population consumes more than 7 times as much grain as is consumed directly by the entire American population.
The amount of grains fed to US livestock is sufficient to feed about 840 million people who follow a plant based diet.
Producing 1 Kg of animal protein requires about 100 times more water than producing 1 Kg of grain protein.
Producing 1 Kg of animal protein requires 25 K Calories of fossil fuel input. To produce 1 Kg of grain protein requires 2.2 K Calories of fossil fuel input.
