The concept of Hortus conclusus with reference to the “enclosed garden” comes from the Latin translation of the Bible, the so-called “Vulgate”, and specifically the “Song of Songs”, and the tradition will eventually be associated with the Virgin Mary. The idea of a "closed garden" is suggestive to us in complete confinement, when we know that its walls (fortunate enough not to live in an urban "hive") are the limits that we cannot go beyond; a "paradise" and a safe place, which we cannot and will not abandon.
The garden is the locus amoenus that evades us from the outside and often takes the form of an "interior" patio, such as those painted by Rusiñol, or even a monastic cloister. In the garden the dog plays, while we look at it like automata; they play there and the kids get bored; we take the sun or the shade, sew or slap on the porch, absent from the world and the life outside.
