Scholarships can be merit aid awarded to students based on a variety of criteria - academic, athletic, special talents or interests, for example.
Scholarships can also be need-based (i.e. awarded based on the student/family financial situation).
There are thousands of scholarships offered by colleges, employers, individuals, private companies, professional organizations, religious groups, and nonprofit organizations, to name a few.
Check with the financial aid office of colleges to which you apply to find out what they offer.
