Language Teaching Studies MA Program Capstone Project
The University of Oregon's Master's program in Language Teaching Studies (LTS) was designed to enhance knowledge and creation in six critical areas called 'pillars:' Language as a Dynamic System, Design, Digitally Mediated Language Learning (DMLL), Assessment, Teaching, and Research. This portfolio showcases the cumulation of my work in this program pertaining to each pillar. I describe each artifact's reasoning, development, and thought processes. As I have developed my knowledge and critical thinking skills in creating teaching materials, curriculum, and lesson plans for this program, I hope this portfolio serves to inform you of the pillars of LTS and similar courses of study.
Languages are systematic but ever-changing, complicated, and chaotic, which causes instructors to be flexible and follow the changes.
Designing language learning content, materials, curriculum, and more is a vital step in improving language proficiency accurately and efficiently.
In today's continuing technological advancements, it can be advantageous and sometimes essential to utilize technology and online resources to develop materials and content for language learners.
For an instructor, assessing language learners' proficiency and understanding is a necessary aspect of the job that can help improve learners' knowledge and lead to higher proficiency.
One of the most critical aspects of language teaching is using the appropriate teaching methods and objectives when developing and implementing lesson plans and curricula for a class of language learners.
Language is continuously changing and theories are often question, so research must be done regularly. As more knowledge is collected in the field, methods and resources must also be improved.
Hello, my name is Britany Stagnoli. I am passionate about the LTS program at the University of Oregon. I have created this portfolio to share my enthusiasm and demonstrate my extensive knowledge and experience in the six pillars of LTS. I previously graduated from Western Oregon University with a bachelor's degree in Social Science and a minor in Linguistics. I also completed the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate alongside my degree. I received basic knowledge of language teaching, but I wanted more, which led me to the LTS program.
It has been my dream to teach English at the university level abroad. I've had experiences teaching PreK through university classes. I enjoyed working at the university level and creating materials and lesson plans for higher education the most. After completing this degree, I will move to Japan to fulfill one of my dreams: teaching English at the university level at a college in Kanazawa and implementing my new knowledge from the LTS program. After fulfilling my contracts in Japan, I plan to pursue my PhD in linguistics. The fields that I am currently interested in pursuing are sociolinguistics and second language acquisition.
