“...responsible for the visual appearance of the actors. These responsibilities include what is seen (clothes, shoes, hats, purses, canes, parasols, jewelry, wigs, makeup, etc.)" --Department of Theatre and Dance
When costume designers beging their work, they often start by creating detailed, colored sketches that form the foundation for the clothing and accessories to be worn by a specific/selected actor. These sketches serve as visual representations of how each character will look on stage, outlining key elements such as style, color palette, texture, and fit.
An incredibly important step for costume designers is thoroughly reading the script to get a sense of theme to base the wardrobe after. It better equips them to create costumes that align with the time period, location, and emotional arc of the characters.
One of the major parts of being a costume designer is communicaiton. They will meet very often with the rest of the creative team to discuss their color options.
