You are in the initial stages of planning and thinking about your Major Project HOWEVER, you will be making a firm decision soon about what you will actually be making so you have a very limited amount of time in which to do this. By the End of week 2 of Term 4, you will be putting a firm proposal to your teacher for approval and if parents are paying for the materials, you will be getting their approval as well. One of the best ways to get an idea of what might consist of a suitable project is to look at what has already been done in the past and what might be possible in the future.
Initial Planning will be conducted over 3 phases. Once the research and planning is completed in Phase 1a and Phase 2a it will be included in your Major Project Portfolio under heading 4. Development of Ideas (headings are from the marking criteria). Phase 1b will also be included in your Major Project Portfolio under the heading 2. Research of components, processes, technologies and resources (headings are from the marking criteria).
From the scanned copies of Australian Woodsmith magazine, find the following:
3 or more articles on projects that you could be interested in constructing something similar or contain elements or features that you find interesting and would like to explore further
They must include a set of working drawings or diagrams and a detailed description of the construction process
Write a brief PINE analysis of the project, explaining what elements you find interesting or attractive.
Include an image of the project and use at least 2 arrows with text boxes to annotate various aspects of the project that you are interested in
Include the issue and page number of the project
From the scanned copies of Australian Woodsmith magazine, complete the following steps:
1. Find 3-5 relevant articles on 2 of the following broad techniques that relate to your major project ideas.
Techniques:
Drawer construction
Finishes
Veneering
Bending wood
Tabletop construction
Workshop tips/tricks and shortcuts
Useful jigs
Knockdown fittings
(Eg. you are thinking of building a display cabinet with a drawer, therefore you would look up 3-5 articles on two topics such as drawer construction and finishes):
2. Read the article
3. Write a brief summary of the article and how it could benefit your potential project.
4. Include the issue and page number of the article that you are referring to.
5. Include images with annotations.
A PINE Analysis is a series of dot points that break down the critique of a project into four areas: positive, interesting, negative and evaluation. For each letter of the word PINE you will identify and describe two to three points.
P = Positive
Describe positive features of the project, reflect on material colour, type of material, features, construction techniques, is it a simple or hard project etc).
I = Interesting
Describe any interesting details, or techniques that have been used, how could they be incorporated into your major project.
N = Negative
Describe any areas of the project you do not like refer to: design how it looks (aesthetics) and how the project functions, reflect on your skill level is this project too complex.
E = Evaluation
Justify your final opinion of the project relating the whole project or aspects of the design to the following areas:
have you got the skills to construct a project like this or aspects of it;
Can the project be completed in the time frame (3 Terms);
Have you got any experience in making a project of this type;
Materials are they suitable would you change them, can you afford to construct the project, what costs are involved.
From the websites below research find between 3 and 5 images and insert them into this document. For each photo, conduct an analysis, stating:
What interests you about the image
How might you incorporate it into your project (don’t get too caught up on being definite about this yet - just a general idea)
What concerns do you have about it, what questions do you have, what additional research might you have to do?
Do not create a new document - complete this task by adding additional slides to the template provided on Google Classroom. All comments and feedback will be given in this document.
Use pictures to assist your analysis and research, use the snipping tool or save from an image search and then insert them.
Get used to using various tools in Google Slides to enhance your presentation such as:
Shape tools
Line tools
Format options such as shading, fill colours, borders, drop shadows etc
Use different but appropriate fonts and colours to make it look professional.
Turn guides on and use them so that text boxes and images are aligned and that your presentation looks neat and organised and fully completed to a professional standard.
RPM planning is a way to maximize the results of your life and maximize your sense of fulfilment and joy. What’s most important to you as an outcome (a result) and why it is important to you (your purpose) will give you the juice to move forward toward realizing your dreams. If you’ve got a strong enough reason and a strong enough purpose, you will figure out how to pull it off.
Completing a Major Project is no easy task, it takes time, skill, dedication and knowledge. By answering these questions below you will help yourself get leverage and uncover your true motivations for completing a Major Project.
Effort = Results !
Results-Oriented
What’s the outcome I’m after? What’s the specific measurable result? The more precise, the stronger it is.
Refer to band (1-6), Quality of project, level of pride/achievement etc.
Purpose-Driven
What is the purpose of the result? What impact will it have? What are my reasons? Why is this not just a “should,” but a must for me? The emotional quality of purpose makes what you will do not only sustainable, but powerful.
Massive Action Plan (MAP)
What specifically needs to happen in order for the goal to be achieved? When does it need to be achieved by? What’s my massive action plan? Not just one or two things. Brainstorm a bunch of ideas. What are all the possibilities, so I can later decide which one has the most power?
Great work! You have developed initial plans, consulted with your parents regarding financial support, developed a Massive Action Planning and gained your teachers final approval. You will now begin Assessment Task 1 Major Project Planning, which consists of the first sections of your Major Project Portfolio. Click the button below for further details.
