Nature is the greatest artist I know. Every time I paint, I’m studying its work—not just its light and movement, but the way it feels to stand beneath an open sky. My watercolor landscapes are not just depictions of central Virginia; they are memories, distillations of a place I have known my whole life.
While I sometimes work from direct reference to challenge myself, painting from memory feels more like an ode—an act of appreciation for the land that means so much to me. Watercolor, with its fluidity and unpredictability, mirrors nature’s own hand. I don’t paint to replicate what I see, but to honor it, to pay attention, and to share what it has given me.
