2013 Carol A. Kearney Leadership Institute
Lead With the Common Core II
Cornell University, Ithaca, August 5-6, 2013
Presenters: Paige Jaeger and Sue Kowalski with special guest Mary Ratzer
This institute prepared new and seasoned school librarians to return to their building with ideas and confidence to meet the demands of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) instruction.
Activities designed to:
Examine the Common Core shifts through a librarian lens.
Define what student-centered learning and participatory learning looks like in the library.
Examine, learn and practice how to “repackage” low-level research units for Common Core Alignment. Students, after all, are supposed to “research to build and present knowledge!”
Examine Essential Questions (EQ’s) that drive Inquiry-based learning, the model for deep learning activities, supported in the CCSS.
Note to Administrators:
Using Inquiry, the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum, database resources, online access to higher level reading resources and creativity, we will weave a tapestry of learning, modeling what Common Core lessons should look like.
The 2013 NYLA/SSL Institute, Lead with the Common Core II, once again seeks to train librarians with 8 simple turnkey spotlights for meeting Common Core objectives. Participants will leave both empowered and excited to lead with the Common Core in your school.
Led by Paige Jaeger and NYLA/SSL President Sue Kowalski with special guest Mary Ratzer, participants will exit ready to assist teachers in "repackaging" and "aligning" their lessons and research projects to embrace deep learning, complex text integration, vocabulary acquisition and application strategies, and leading independent reading initiatives.
