History

The Yugoslav Society for Neuroscience was founded in October 1991. Its primary goals were establishing and developing cooperation among researchers in the field of neuroscience in Serbia and Yugoslavia, as well as establishing cooperation with similar societies and groups in Europe and worldwide.

During the 1990s, the Society gained large number of members. Besides scientific and professional lectures which were held on a regular basis, during this period The Yugoslav Society for Neuroscience successfully organized three international scientific congresses. At the end of the decade, the Society suspended its activities.

In 2005, under the new name, The Neuroscience Society of Serbia and Montenegro reestablishes its activities. In July 2006, at the IBRO Governing Council which was held in Vienna , the Society renewed its membership in the family of international neuroscience societies (IBRO).

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Belgrade School of Neurobiology, on 29 May 2006, the Society organized a two-day symposium “Neurobiology Today”, which was attended by 200 domestic and foreign participants. The Serbian Neuroscience Society’s 4th Congress was held in Kragujevac, from 11 to 14 September 2008.

Today, The Serbian Neuroscience Society gathers about 150 members working on different research projects in all areas of neuroscience. President of the Society is academician professor Ljubisa Rakic.

The objectives of the Society are coordinaton of work of all the members and organisation of lectures and seminars in the field of neuroscience, as well as organisation of regular biennial conferences. The Society has renewed the membership in major European associations in the field of neuroscience.
