PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is building the next generation of informed media creators and consumers

We create transformative educational experiences through video journalism that inspire youth to find their voice and engage with their communities. We believe that thoughtful, well-grounded local reporting and the interdisciplinary work of video production are powerful forms of learning and civic engagement. SRL lesson plans, assignment prompts and instruction tools facilitate project-based learning that builds critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.

This election year, SRL is creating intentional pathways for teens to produce original news stories for local audiences, enabling schools, media outlets and students to work together to enrich local news and create on-ramps for young people to become civically engaged and informed media creators and consumers.

We need student journalists to ensure the voices of the country's youngest voters are heard.

"Voting is a fundamental act of civic participation through which young people contribute to democracy. While it’s one of many ways that youth engagement can take, it is a powerful way for youth to make their voices heard and to have an impact on issues that affect them and their communities."
