Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean off southeast India. Inhabited originally by the Vedda, the island was later invaded by the Singhalese (6th century BC) and the Tamils (11th and 12th centuries AD). The lucrative spice trade on the island was controlled
successively by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders from the 12th century. It became a British colony in 1798 and achieved
independence in 1948. In 1972 the island was declared a republic, and adopted the Singhalese name of Sri Lanka. Population: 20 million. Colombo is the largest city. The national political capital, however, is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, just east of Colombo.
Portuguese invasions in the 16th and 17th centuries were unsuccessful. The city and the region has been known by many different names and versions of those names.

Anuradapura is the Ceylonese political and religious capital that flourished for 1,300 years. It was abandoned after an invasion in 993. Once again accessible, this splendid site with its palaces, onasteries and monuments was hidden away in thick jungle for a long time. The Buddhist principality flourished for a century until it was temporarily overthrown by an invader from the Chola Kingdom of South India. According to the Mahavansa, the Sinhala Buddhist chronicle, the city was well-constructed city and a model of planning.
Like any other ancient South Asian city, the city of Polonnaruwa consisted of the royal precinct located within a citadel. It had a defence wall system, moats, monastic and devale complexes which were the
ritual centres, and a well laid out market complex.On the boundaries of the city were craft production centres and beyond them the agricultural hinterland. Vijayabahu's victory and shifting of kingdoms to the more strategic Polonnaruwa is considered significant, but the real "Hero of Polonnaruwa" of the history books is actually his grandson, Parakramabahu.
Sigiriya has it all. Nothing in Sri Lanka better captures the imagination. This 200 metre lump of granite rises majestically out of the flat central plains. Its blood-stained history is full of intrigue, with astonishing frescos of bare-breasted maidens painted 15 centuries ago, and a wall covered in graffiti that is more Than 1,000 years old. To top it all it has Asia's oldest surviving landscape garden. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress of Sri Lanka is situated in the Matale district near Dambulla. It can be reached along The Colombo-Habarana highway.
Dambulla is about 12 miles south west of Sigiriya, on the Matale-Anuradhapura Road. The largest cave carries 48 statues of Lord Buddha, with statues of some Hindu gods (Vishnu and Saman). The statues of the Hindu gods date back to the 12th century when Hinduism took root in Sri Lanka and started influencing the arts. The history of these caves dates back to the 1st or 2nd century B.C. when King Valagam Bahu took refuge in the caves while escaping from the invading army that drove him out of Anuradhapura.
Kandy became the capital city of the last remaining independent kingdom in the island after the coastal regions were conquered by the Portuguese in 1592. Several invasions by the Portuguese and Dutch (16th, 17th and 18th centuries) and later by the British (most notably in 1803) were repelled.

Minneriya National Park is located between Habarana and Polonnaruwa. Covered an area of 8890 hectares park is an ideal place for elephant and leopard watching. The vegetation of this park is mixed evergreen and scrub areas. The important feature of this park is that 3rd century built Minneriya Tank is located in the park. During the dry season Minneriya tank becomes the ideal place to observe its natural wild life.Minneriya National Park is home to 24 species of mammals,160 species of birds , 75 species of butterfly?s, 9 species of amphibians, 26 species of fish and 25 species of reptiles.Day jeep safari with a reliable guide will get you the opportunity to evident the natural beauty of the park and most of the wildlife. The Temple of the sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy is the most venerated place of worship for Buddhists throughout the world. Built in the 16th century, this temple houses the sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha brought to Sri Lanka from the Kalinga province in ancient India in the 4th century AD.

Horton Plains, located on a high windswept saddle at about 7,000 ft. (2134 m) elevation. The plains are an expanse of misty grassland with scraggy trees and icecold rivulets. World’s End is considered to be the finest view in all of Sri Lanka. The awesome escarpment drops vertically for about 4,000 feet, hence its name was given. Plains are also famous for the greenery and the cold climate.
Though not the highest mountain of Sri Lanka, the striking pyramid of Adam's Peak (7,360 ft) is certainly the most remarkable. A depression in the rocky summit resembles a huge footprint, which has been venerated as a sacred sigh from remote antiquity. This was identified by Buddhists as the Buddha's footprint, by Hindus as that of Shiva, and by Muslims as Adam's. Later the Portuguese attributed it to St. Thomas the Apostle.

In Kosgoda, visit the Turtle hatchery which is being operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Several species of turtles, especially the endangered hawksbill are protected here. Most vulnerable of all are their eggs, which are left uncovered on beaches all around the coast. The goodwill of Kosgoda area fishermen who bring these eggs gratis to the hatchery has lead to the hatching and has released around 100,000 young turtles within a period of two years since the hatchery has been opened
